Vermont Marble Company treasurer's records, 1849-1940 (bulk 1866-1884).

The Vermont Marble Company Treasurer's Records are the business records kept by Adolphus Smedberg of the Rutland Marble Company and it's successor, the Vermont Marble Company. The collection includes correspondence, financial statements, bills and receipts and contracts, agreement and other legal papers, 1866-1884. Smedberg worked in the company's New York City office and much of the correspondence is on letterhead of the Rutland Marble Co., and Baxter Manufacturing Co., and is reports from the Rutland and Salem, N.Y. quarry managers. Repeat correspondents include John N. Baxter, J.B. Holley, Charles A. Frost, B.F. Woodruff, John D. Allan, N.P. Simon, H.H. Love, C. Clark, Charles L. Sanford, E.F. Dana, William W. Clark, and J. Clark. There are also letters from Redfield Proctor, first as manager of the Sutherland Falls Marble Co., and then as manager of the Rutland Marble Co. planning the creation of the Vermont Marble Co. A major project of the Vermont Marble Company was providing the marble for the Indiana State House, 1880-1884, and the correspondence and notes on specifications and estimates are included in this collection.

The Vermont Marble Company was created in 1881 as a result of the merger of the Sutherland Falls Marble Co. and the Rutland Marble Co. The Rutland Marble Co. had been incorporated in New York City and included quarries in West Rutland, Center Rutland, and Salem, N.Y. Redfield Proctor was Secretary of War, 1888-1891. He also served as Governor and Senator from Vermont. George Crook was a Major-general in the army.
